The Plot
Let me start by talking about how fucking good this movie is. Everything about it just hits on all levels. The plot was not what I expecting but was pleasantly surprised by what it was. I walked into that IMAX theater thinking it was going to be very heavy on the process of making the first atomic weapon. That was more of the background story and the movie was split into three very distinct sections. The first hour of the movie was about young Oppenheimer’s love for science, His love for women, And his flirtatious nature with Communism. Very interesting to say the least. I Figured I knew a lot about this guy but I have never been so happy to be wrong.
The Second hour was about the bomb and them building it then doing the Trinity test. During this part he visits with old friends builds a fun summer camp for a bunch of nerds and does something else important I forget what though. Oh yeah built and tested an atomic weapon. This gave some background on all of the people who will in part three either help or hinder Oppie. The Trinity Test scene was such a powerful scene, masterfully done, the silences was deafening. If you haven’t seen it yet you will understand when you do.
The final hour of this epic was about the absolute witch hunt the U.S. government had against Oppenheimer. Through the whole movie Oppie was accused of being a Communist. Now I have no idea if this is fact or not he was teetering on the commie edge all movie but they never confirmed it as a fact and who knows how historically accurate it is. You find out who the bad guys are and if you didn’t know the history going into the movie you can probably guess who it is. 10/10 for the story Nolan does it again with another masterpiece.
The Cast
This cast was huge every time you get done saying, “oh shit that guy.” Another actor or actress walks on screen you recognize. Scarecrow (Cillian Murphy), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), And Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) had absolutely polarizing performances. Other cameos that stood out were Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) and super action star Emily Blunt. Gary Oldman snuck in with a haunting performance of Harry Truman and gave a great line to Oppie near the end of the film. Pretty much told Oppie to stop being a pussy. I dropped the bombs because fuck you that’s why. 10/10 for the cast honestly at this point just give all of the Oscars to this film.
The Presentation
The cinematography of this movie was as amazing as all of Christopher Nolan’s movies are. The creative B-roll when Oppenheimer was day dreaming of the cosmos or discussing the different parts of quantum mechanics was breathtaking especially in IMAX. Each scene had a “hand-cam” feel to them which gave the movie a more gritty and personal feeling to it. The colors felt very on par for most WWII era movies lots of browns and subtle colors. I feel like this makes the story more important and you are less distracted by blasts of color until it is needed like for the Trinity Test. 10/10 beautiful movie. It is hard to find flaws, I will be rewatching to see if I can find some but this film left me smiling.
The Jury
10/10 overall score but are we surprised? If this movie doesn’t win at least 8 Oscars I would be shocked. Best Picture, Best actor, Best supporting actor, Best screenplay, and Best score for sure. This movie was great start to finish. It was beautifully written, shot, and was an emotional roller coaster till its end. Everyone should see this movie at the very least to appreciate the history.
