The Plot
Hotel Artemis was a wild ride right out of the gate. It was probably my fault for doing absolutely no research before watching this film, But I was not ready for the futuristic tech and setting. I thought it was a murder mystery from looking at the cover art. Boy was I happy to be wrong this movie kicked ass. According to Rotten Tomatoes it was hot garbage with a score of 57% but what do they know. I have always enjoyed the criminal underground having a sanctuary story arc, like the Continental in the John Wick films. If the Avengers or the Justice League can have a cool hang out then so can bad guys damn it. There was an assassination in the hotel, a couple of good action sequences to get your heart pumping, and a subtle back story to tie all of the characters together. This movie was on the shorter side being only 94 minutes, but they tied everything together nicely with the time they had. Only bitch i really have about this movie is they made everyone feel unimportant. Like the main bad guy isn’t really scary because 1. it is Jeff Goldblum and 2. he is waxed out of his mind on truth serum drugs so he wont shut up. It is funny don’t get me wrong but he is suppose to be the scariest gang banger in LA in 2028. Maybe I am over thinking it but his son was Spock in the new star trek movies and that is all I could think about. I pretty much had a reaction like this for every character. Over all the plot was a 6/10 for me good movie but needed more of everything.
The Cast
This movie was stacked for it slipping through the radar back in 2018. You have Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) as a nurse/engineer/muscle man. You have Clarice (Jodie Foster) as the head of the hotel/doctor lady with the troubled past and scared of going outside. Charlie (Charlie Day) as the asshole arms dealer that has his head smashed in all movie. Blade leg Chick in the Kingsman (Sofia Boutella) who is a bad ass assassin with love connections to the bank robber (Sterling K. Brown). He is only there to take care of his brother who is a forever fuck up (Brian Tyree Henry). Spock shows up with a neck tattoo (Zachary Quinto) to help his dad get a room at the hotel (Jeff Goldblum). Oh Cheddar Bob was there too doing Cheddar Bob stuff (Evan Jones). 8/10 Cast for sure Cheddar Bob almost made it 9/10 but he didn’t have enough screen time.
The Presentation
The feel of this movie was grim and gritty with some comedic undertones. The Nurse and how she interacts with the other characters made me chuckle more than a few times. Everest’s delivery of his “I am an orderly” speech was great too. The whole movie is taking place during a massive riot taking place in LA over a company taking away the clean drinking water. Honestly super believable Scenario and made the movie more engaging because it kept every character on edge. I will Give this movie a 6/10 on the presentation. It just wasn’t long enough and needed to dive deeper in all of the things that made the movie worth watching.
The Jury
I enjoyed this movie and think if you are looking for a quick and gritty action movie you will too. The average score came out to be 6.6/10 so not terrible. The cast was the real pillar to keep this film standing but the plot and presentation were not bad just not the “Dark Knight” good.
