Avatar 1 & 2
Blue Monkey Adventures
The Plot
Avatar was a groundbreaking film that changed the entire world of motion capture for cinema. Then we waited a whole fuck ton of years for James Cameron to change the motion capture world again so we can enjoy his beauty under water. Avatar fallows the story of Jake Sully a Marine in a wheelchair who takes an off-world job in his brother’s place after his death. Jake is sent to Pandora to fulfill his brothers roll as an Avatar and help the science team learn about the planet. After some fuckery Jake finds himself amongst the natives and begins to learn their ways to befriend them. Naturally He falls in love with a girl, shit goes south, and he must fight off the soldiers to defend his new home.
Avatar 2: The Way of Water is pretty much the same idea as the first film only water. Jake now a full-time avatar is living peacefully with his family until the humans come back to Pandora and decide to fuck the planet up again. This time they are looking for very rare whale juice which stops aging in humans. Much different than the super rare rocks they were mining in the first film. Jake saves his family and does a whole bunch of water stuff and leads us into the next very long wait for the third film.
6/10 For the plot on these films. It is not a groundbreaking story and honestly the plots are forgettable. You are either going to love or hate these films and there does not seem to be an in-between. I am a big James Cameron fan but not for his ability to come up with a story it is for his cinematography.
The Cast
The cast for these films is big with some equally large names. Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana lead the cast with support from Sigourney Weaver and Stephan Lang. The second film expands the cast to bring a whole bunch of new talent to Hollywood and if James gets his way have them all filming for their parts in future films for years to come. 8/10 The cast is memorable and really makes the movie great. It’s not Avengers: Endgame large but it is a rock-solid group of actors and the performances they gave were awesome.
The Presentation
These movies are beautiful. 10/10 for the presentation. I mean the beauty of these movies is so good they got their own section inside of the Disney parks. If you have the funds, I highly recommend you go and enjoy the banshee ride. The world of Pandora is so immersive it is the only reason I keep rewatching these movies. James Cameron did such a great job building this world it makes the crazy run time worth watching. Like I said before I like James for his cinematography not for his stories.
The Jury
8/10 overall, these movies are solid if you are going for the spectacle of everything. The story is a little meh, but you are not there for that. It is all about the massive battles and the huge environments. But this must be the best version of big blue monkey Pocahontas if you are looking for story. This movie is fun for the whole family and the multiple Billions of dollars they have made means you probably have already seen it. If you haven’t then you should get on it.
